Module 5 A Wellness Philosophy This writer joined the a vitamin company (Shaklee) in 1970 and wanted to learn what was going on. He heard many miracle stories that followed this pattern. "I used to have such and such disease, and once I started taking these products all my symptoms went away and I was a new person." Sick people had a marketing edge! I was young and fit. My family had good genetics, with no history of cancer, diabetes or any other major illness. I'm not tall or the best looking guy in the world, but I have definitely been blessed with good general health. As a child, I had been given cod liver oil. And the food industry puts supplements everywhere. Most Americans use iodized salt. Vitamin D is added to milk. Breakfast cereals have added vitamins. We all take them. I started taking supplements on my own at age 28. At first I took them for the business. I wanted to walk the walk, so I started with one of everything every day, and I took more of some products. Almost overnight, I was a full-fledged vitamin nut. Improving my habits was harder. I ate fast food, carbonated drinks and fried chicken...and I loved snacking on saltines while watching TV. It's hard to worry about your eating habits when you've always been healthy. You feel indestructible. I had never been too fond of veggies, but I learned to enjoy raw broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and a few other 'scary-type' vegetables. I did not have a personal miracle, but I had this... I take supplements because I appreciate my good health and want to keep it. I've read some nutrition books and they make sense most of the time. I'm not a fanatic, nor am I against doctors. My goals are to feel good and live a long and active life. I don't go to doctors very often, but if I need one, I appreciate the advice and treatment. I want to be healthy enough that if a disease comes along I might not get it. That's not always possible, but if I do get sick, I'd prefer a mild case. I'd like to be well very quickly! I love life and want to live it! If I'm in an accident, I want my body to be prepared in advance to heal itself. As I grow older (now 66), I want to look youthful, be free from pain as much as possible, remain alert and active and I want to live longer. We're all going to die, and when that happens from natural causes it's hard to say if things might have been different. Basically, a person who wants to live a longer and better life has to make some decisions and follow through as best he can. In 1945, after leaving the military, Walton bought a variety store. With a loan of $20,000 from his father-in-law, plus $5,000 he had saved from his time in the Army, Walton purchased a Ben Franklin variety store in Newport, Arkansas.
It was here that Walton pioneered many concepts that would prove to be crucial to his success. He made sure the shelves were consistently stocked with a wide range of goods. His store also stayed open later than most other stores, especially during the Christmas season. He also pioneered the practice of discount merchandising by buying wholesale goods from the lowest priced supplier. This allowed him to pass on savings to his customers, which drove up his sales volume.
